Finding your way around

The sidebar, your organizations and where everything lives in Steplane.

Steplane has a sidebar on the left and the page you're working on to its right.

The sidebar

  • Organization menu (top). Shows the organization you're working in. Open it for the organization's Settings, or, if you belong to several, for example as a consultant working with different clients, to switch between them. Settings has a page for each setting of the organization and of your account; while it's open, the sidebar lists them, and Back to app returns.
  • Inbox. What needs your attention (see The inbox). The number shows how many items you haven't seen yet.
  • Landscape. The whole company at a glance, with management processes, core processes and support processes.
  • All processes. Every process in a list you can filter (see All processes).
  • Projects. Change projects with their planned versions of processes and their findings.
  • Standards. Which ISO requirements your processes cover.
  • Improvements. Where your processes have friction, what to improve first and the cheapest fix (see Improvements).
  • Active projects. Quick links to the change projects in progress. A number shows open findings.
  • Your account (bottom). Your account's settings, Help & docs (these docs), the light or dark theme, and logging out.

The inbox

The inbox collects what needs your attention: the list on the left, and the item you choose on the right, with why it's in your inbox and what to do about it, right there. What needs you comes first:

  • Waiting for your approval: a change where you're the next approver, with Approve and Send back. A change you can edit that an approver sent back shows here too, with their comment.
  • Due for review: a process you're responsible for whose review date has passed, with Record review and the process's other actions.
  • Gaps in your processes: what the checks found missing or unclear in a process you're responsible for, such as a step without a role, one item per process. Processes without an owner show up for everyone who can edit.
  • Standards (owners and admins): the clauses of a standard you work towards that no process covers yet, with a link to the Standards page.
  • From Linear (project owners): the Linear project a change project is linked to was completed or cancelled.
  • To describe and Not on the landscape (people who can edit): the library's backlog, one item each: the processes that are only a name so far, with Describe next to each, and the processes without a place, with Place and Choose parent….

A dot marks what you haven't opened yet. Items leave the inbox by themselves once they're resolved, for example when the review is recorded, and each item says when. If one needs nothing more from you, choose Dismiss; Dismissed at the top lists those, and Move back returns one. What you've read or dismissed is yours alone.

All processes

All processes lists every process with its status, owner, landscape group, home parent, last change and next review. Filter by status, owner, group, a system the process uses, or an ISO clause; sort by name, status, owner, next review or last change; and group by status, group or owner. Retired processes appear only when you filter for them. The filters are part of the page address, so you can share a view.

Press j and k to move through the list and

Enter to open a process. On a phone, the list shows each process's name, status and owner.

Process status

Processes show their status as a colored dot with a label:

  • Published: the official, current version.
  • In a project: a change project is preparing a new version.
  • Review due: the owner should review it.
  • Draft: being described, not official yet.

A process with a dashed border is a placeholder: it has a name, but nobody has described it yet.

Keyboard shortcuts

  • Ctrl+K (⌘+K on Mac): open the command menu. Type to jump to any page, process or project, switch organization or change the theme. You can also click Search at the top of the sidebar.
  • Ctrl+B (⌘+B on Mac): show or hide the sidebar.
  • D: switch between light and dark mode.

On a phone, the sidebar opens from the menu button at the top left.

Every page has its own address, including each tab of a process. Copy it from the browser to share it with a colleague in the same organization; it opens the same page for them.
